He has done things countless times more severe – the current estimate of deaths resulting from his reductions to USAID stands at 600,000 and increasing, and recently research forecast his energy policies would kill another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have risked – truly, no previous leader would have conceived – independently wrecking large sections of the White House to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of some of the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom maintain dealings with the government.

As confusing as it is to witness the president try to upend the old idea of democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there is one large group among Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Essentially, they transformed an image of love into a figure of hostility who blesses precisely the cruelties that he condemned in the Gospel; this has happened at a slower pace, over decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Christ from my childhood, as conceptually Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and given that the rapidly expanding group among Americans might have little sense regarding him as they consider themselves non-believers or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. The evident and clear fact that the Savior of the gospels advocates for a form of extreme compassion concentrated on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christian religion somewhat of a scandalous religion: attractive to the general public, but because of its natural unconventionality requiring to be contained. In the fifties it was restrained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
