A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
